Susie Napper - Compagne des arts et des lettres du Québec

Prix et reconnaissances

On June 10, 2024, Susie Napper received the insignia of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec, a prestigious distinction bestowed to personalities whose exemplary achievements reflect the artistic and literary development of Quebec. Discover the tribute paid to her by the Council.

Cellist, gambist, entrepreneur and educator, Susie Napper has spent her life globetrotting between centuries and continents, tracts and scores, musical instruments and kitchen utensils, her musical genius bleeding into her culinary talent. She loves to give and receive, at home and on stage, where her bow dances and her ideas merge, transcended by her bold execution.

Born in London, educated in Paris and New York, Susie Napper came to Montréal with her partner, the iconic musician Bruce Haynes. Managing careers on either side of the ocean, the couple wanted their children to grow up as bilingual Quebecers.

Over the years, the musician has offered innovative, creative, colourful performances of the baroque repertoire and brought unifying events to the world. Les Voix humaines and the Montreal Baroque Festival are some of her creations to bring together music lovers and neophytes. Honours she has received include a Women of Distinction Award and being named Personality of the Year at the 2002 Prix Opus.

A child of the 1960s, she has a rebellious spirit and demands freedom of expression while seeking harmony in music as in life.
