On June 10, 2024, André Forcier received the insignia of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec, a prestigious distinction bestowed to personalities whose exemplary achievements reflect the artistic and literary development of Quebec. Discover the tribute paid to him by the Council.
If Fellini had had a child with Buñuel, his name would be André Forcier. Before becoming a screenwriter and director, the cofounder of the distribution company Cinéma libre dreamed of becoming a criminal lawyer. For close to 60 years, he has instead been offering us spectacular pleadings in images, giving Québec film its credentials in fantasy and a reinvented language.
André Forcier has constructed his truth in stories that have earned him international recognition and the highest honours, including the Prix Albert-Tessier and an Iris Tribute Award. At the helm of Films du Paria, he is wrapping up his 19th film, Ababouiné.
Using magical realism, André Forcier plays with contradictions in his work, where taking flight and falling, hot and cold water, appear side by side. His imagination has produced screenplays that transport us into worlds both familiar and unknown, combining the depth of Shakespearean drama with the extravagance of burlesque shows. Like life, his films are gloriously unpredictable. Impossible to categorize, he has managed a quiet revolution with faithful collaborators, populating his stories with marginal, moving, fantastical characters.
