Architectural research #

Architectural research includes practices, discourse and works intended to renew artistic language in the realms of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and environmental design.

Art critic #

Critics must have published articles and texts in magazines, newspapers, exhibition catalogues or event programmes.

Arts and crafts #

The following are considered to be in the field of arts and crafts: « the production of original works which are unique or in multiple copies, intended for a utilitarian, decorative or expressive purpose and conveyed by the practice of a craft related to the working of wood, leather, textiles, metals, silicates or any other material».

Arts professional #

The term "arts professional" encompasses independent curators, art critics and cultural workers.

Circus arts #

The circus arts are understood to encompass forms of expression in which the mastery of one or more circus techniques is essential. The circus techniques eligible for this grant program are those widely recognized by professional circus arts schools.

Common assessment framework #

Work plan, which can contain a schedule, in which organizations or artists evaluate their own progress or delays, in terms of knowledge, skills, processes, or decisions.

Copresentation #

Activity in which the financial risk for presenting a show is shared between the promoter, production organization, artist or curator and at least one other partner.

Coproduction #

A coproduction refers to a partnership between two or more promoters, artists, curators or production and/or presentation organizations. The promoters pool their talent to create an artistic activity or event and contribute to and share the production costs for a public presentation.

The agreement signed between coproducers must clearly indicate the obligations of each party and reflect that the applicant’s control over all stages of the production.

Dance #

Dance encompasses a plurality of forms and styles and recognizes the diversity of cultures and traditions.

Digital arts #

The digital arts are defined as an array of explorations and artistic practices whose processes and works rely mainly on the digital technologies for creation and dissemination. The digital arts incorporate practices involving the use of communications and information technologies, including computer, electronic, digital, sound, interactive and Web technologies, and also include the audio arts.

Discoverability #

“Capacity to easily discover an item, whether it be an application or piece of content.” (Discoverability: Toward a Common Frame of Reference – Part 1, pg. 10). Discoverability allows the public to effectively identify and access cultural content on websites and digital networks.

Emerging #

Artists under 35 or with less than five years of artistic practice are considered emerging.

The number of years of practice is determined taking into account the artist’s entire career and includes years of practice in another discipline.

Film and video #

The discipline of film and video art includes independent productions of fiction and documentary, experimental works and video installations.

Independent production in film and video implies that the creator has full control of the content and production of the work and all other aspects of production and presentation. He holds all reproduction and public exhibition rights for his work and can, by granting a license, extend such rights to a producer or an independent distributor.

Handicapped person #

According to the Act to secure handicapped persons in the exercise of their rights with a view to achieving social, school and workplace integration This link will open in a new window, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec defines a person with a disability as follows:

A “handicapped person” means a person with a deficiency causing a significant and persistent disability, who is liable to encounter barriers in performing everyday activities.

Hip-hop #

The CALQ supports the following disciplines as part of hip-hop culture-based arts:

• dance (particularly street dance styles such as breakdancing)
• music (rap, DJing, beatmaking)
• visual arts (mural painting, graffiti, street art)
• as well as spoken-word arts (slam, spoken word).

Hypermedia literary works #

Hypermedia literary works focus on artistic practices driven by a literary text while relying on information and communications technologies. These technologies serve to create and disseminate visual, graphic or sound components that relate to the literary works in a dynamic interface. Works of this nature are mainly disseminated by means of a Web or digital interface.

Inappropriate behaviour #

However, no form of verbal violence against, harassment of, or intimidation of its employees following a decision, or at any point in the grant application process, will be tolerated. The following are examples of inappropriate behaviour:

1. raising one’s voice;
2. using an aggressive, unpleasant, or vulgar tone or language;
3. making direct or indirect threats;
4. making defamatory, discriminatory, hateful, racist, xenophobic, sexist, or homophobic statements;
5. communicating too frequently or at inappropriate times;
6. messages that are incomprehensible, incoherent, and off topic;
7. refusing to accept the responses provided.

Independent curator #

To be recognized as an independent curator in the disciplines of visual arts, arts and crafts, architectural research, digital arts, and film and video art, you must:

• have produced independent projects;
• have to your credit at least one public presentation and have published at least one critical text in a professional context;
• have professional experience in organizing artistic projects;
• not be employed full time as a curator in an arts organization.

Inuit and First Nations artist #

• Eligible artists include the Inuit and members of Canada's First Nations residing in Québec.
• Artists must be continuously engaged in their artistic practice and must have received recognition from their community or on their territory as practitioners of their art form, whether traditional or contemporary.
• For the purposes of the CALQ's programs, the term "artist" also includes writers, storytellers and artisans/creators.

ISNI #

The International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) identifies an individual or organization involved in the creation, production, management and distribution of intellectual or artistic content. An ISNI has 16 digits and is unique, in the sense that each number can be assigned only to a single individual or organization.

Literacy (digital) #

The ability to understand and use technologies in everyday life and to understand information presented in a variety of digital formats and how to use it in a safe and productive manner.

Literary show #

This notion refers to a text that an author performs before an audience. The text performed can be derived from one or several literary works and its presentation can rely on other artistic disciplines and/or theatrical techniques.

Literature and Storytelling #

This discipline includes written literature, storytelling and literary spoken word.

Written literature

Literary fiction encompasses the novel, poetry, short stories, tales, narrative, youth literature and hypermedia literary works.

Essays focus solely on the comprehension and exploration of artistic and literary life.

Storytelling show

This practice refers to shows based on stories or tales drawn from the oral or written tradition or new creations. The storytelling show usually relies on simple means in which the spoken word predominates. It is noteworthy in that the oral recitation or narration is detached from the writing process and sustained by the proximity of the listener such that the story is reinvented every time it is told.

Spoken word in the literary domain

Spoken word revisits the rhythm and sound of words, using the written word as the point of departure. Interaction with the audience has an impact on the spoken word performance and sometimes the text. Spoken word literary forms include literary shows, literary performance, slam, poetry performances, sound poetry, performance poetry, etc.

Metadata #

“A metadata is a datum used to define or describe another data regardless of its medium (paper or electronic).” (Page “Metadata”, Wikipedia). Metadata is structured and tagged information that facilitates the discovery of a work according to various criteria.

Multidisciplinary arts #

The multidisciplinary arts encompass forms of expression that make use of an array of disciplinary languages, knowledge and techniques. The resulting works can be associated with the performing arts, socially-engaged art, collaborations between science and art, environmental art, urban art, and art in relation to new technologies and can suggest different audience relationships, e.g. presentation in unconventional spaces, a walking trail or a participatory public.

Music #

This discipline includes classical and non-classical music.

Classical music

Classical music includes contemporary music, electroacoustic music and lyric art.

Non-classical music

Non-classical music refers to jazz, contemporary music (musique actuelle), traditional music, instrumental music and world music.

Partnership #

Any form of cooperation between natural or legal persons, contributing to the realization of a project through the pooling of material, human or financial resources.

Performance indicator #

A performance indicator is a quantified or qualified measurement, or a set of measurements, that enables you to evaluate the results of one of more actions, the benefits, and the achievement of objectives for a project. These indicators can be included in dashboards or any other type of tracking tool.

Professional artist #

The CALQ considers professional artists those who:

• Declare themselves to be professional artists;
• Produce works or practice an art on their own behalf or offer services for payment, as creators or performers, in disciplines within the CALQ’s jurisdiction;
• Have been recognized by their peers;
• Publicly present or perform works at sites or in a context recognized by their peers.

Self-presentation #

Activity in which promoters, production organizations, artists or curators assume the full financial risk for presenting their show.

Self-production #

Activity in which promoters, production organizations, artists or curators handle the artistic direction and costs for designing and presenting the project.

Sound art #

Sound art is an artistic practice in which sound and listening are the raw materials of creation, generating auditory, visual and sensory works situated between the visual and digital arts. Distinct from music, sound art is characterized by its conceptual approach and its ties to plastic arts, installation and interactive technologies.

Speech arts #

Speech arts encompass practices that use the voice and words as the main means of expression. They include, but are not limited to, slam, storytelling, oral poetry and spoken word. These forms showcase the work of written or oral creation using literary langauge, in the presence of an audience, using the voice, rhythm and gestures to convey emotions and messages.

Spoken word artist in the literary domain #

These artists practice spoken word literary forms, which encompass poetry performances, rap poetry, sound poetry, dub poetry, performance poetry, etc. These artists have not necessarily been published.

Spoken word creation in the literary domain #

The written word, which is usually the starting point for spoken word creation, is reshaped through emphasis on the rhythm and resonance of words.

Interaction with the public has an impact on the spoken word performance and also occasionally on the text.

Sustainable development #

According to the Sustainable Development Act This link will open in a new window, sustainable development is defi ned as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainable development is based on a long-term vision that takes into account the inseparable nature of the environmental, social and economic dimensions of development activities.

Theatre #

In this context, theatre includes theatre for adults, children’s and youth theatre and puppet theatre or any other related form of artistic expression.

Up-and-coming Inuit or First Nations artists #

Up-and-coming artists are starting out in the artistic practice they wish to pursue. They have received recognition by other artists or by their community.

Visual arts #

The visual arts encompass painting, sculpture, engraving, photography, drawing, illustration, mixed techniques, installations, comic strips, performance, textile arts or any other form of related expression.
