Prix et reconnaissances

On June 10, 2024, Rosie Godbout received the insignia of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec, a prestigious distinction bestowed to personalities whose exemplary achievements reflect the artistic and literary development of Quebec. Discover the tribute paid to her by the Council.

Born in Toulon and arriving in Québec in the wake of the Quiet Revolution, Rosie Godbout has changed the world by dressing it. Weaver, felt maker, visual artist, teacher and self-taught creator, since 1978 she has produced wearable artworks whose beauty and originality are celebrated internationally.

A poet of textile and colour, Rosie Godbout invented a new way of making with materials as old as time. Since 1991, she has been transferring her knowledge and the fruits of her research at the École-atelier en construction textile de Montréal, contributing to the training and professional development of artisans. Twice she has won the Grand Prix des Métiers d’art du Québec, as well as the Prix Jean-Marie-Gauvreau for her remarkable work. She was also named Artisan Emeritus by the Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec.

Someone who loves to transform materials with her bare hands, Rosie Godbout sets the beauty of ancestral methods against the framework of decidedly contemporary pieces. Original combinations of threads, wool, silk, soluble paper, beads and velvet chenille emerge from her studio. The rich, refined colours and textures, the blending of patterns and the intermeshing of pictorial references lend harmony to the structure of her creations.
