Dictionaries have limits that Linda Gaboriau ignores. For over 45 years, this translator emeritus has brought together two solitudes by bringing to the world the voices, spirits and worlds of iconic Québec authors such as Michel Tremblay, Michel Marc Bouchard, Jasmine Dubé, Normand Chaurette, Wajdi Mouawad, Marie-Claire Blais and Jovette Marchessault.

Life led Linda Gaboriau from Boston to Montréal, from Harvard to the Sorbonne and from Heidelberg University to McGill. A journalist on the counter-culture beat, she turned toward theatre, became a dramaturgical consultant at the Centre des auteurs dramatiques centre for playwrights, created translation review workshops and founded the first international literary translation centre in North America located in Banff.

Almost 150 translations speak to the accomplishments of this virtuoso, who knows her way around nuance and double entendres, familiar and formal registers, and jargon and joual. The excellence of her work has been recognized with many prestigious awards. Painstaking and sensitive, Linda Gaboriau continues to perform her high-wire act between languages and cultures, text and the stage, to convey the soul of works and the music of words.
