The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) is proud to associate with Culture Montréal in order to award the CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal.
This CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal confers a cash award of $10 000 and will be awarded to an artist, writer or collective from Montréal for an original work that was publicly presented between August 31, 2023 and September 1, 2024.
Objectives of the prize
The principal objectives of the CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal are to:
- Highlight the excellence of an artistic creation
- Promote recognition of emerging professional artists and writers
- Offer tangible support to the artist's career
- Heighten public awareness of the prizewinning work.
Eligibility requirements
Under the structure of the CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal, the term “artist” designates equally writers, storytellers and crafts persons as well as architecture professionals.
Eligible for the CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal are emerging professional artists or collectives working in the following disciplines: circus arts, digital arts, visual arts, multidisciplinary arts, film and video, popular song, dance, literature, storytelling and spoken word creation, arts and crafts, music, theatre and architectural research.
Status
Any artist whose candidacy is submitted must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant as contemplated in section 2(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and in both instances must have resided in the Montréal region for at least one year.
A professional artist is defined as follows:
- They declare themselves to be professional artists.
- They create works or practice an art of their own account or offer their services for remuneration as creators or performers, especially in fields under the CALQ's responsibility.
- They have gained the recognition of their peers and
- disseminate or publicly perform their works in places or contexts recognized by their peers.
Moreover, except for writers, storytellers and spoken word artists, the emerging artist must:
- Have participated in at least one production outside of his training or subsequent to it, in a professional context recognized by his peers.
- Have a maximum of five years of professional artistic practice by the application deadline. The number of years of professional artistic practice is determined taking into account the applicant's overall career and includes the number of years of practice in another discipline.
The emerging writer must:
- Have published one or two books maximum or published between a minimum of three and a maximum of five texts in a literary genre eligible for a grant offered by the CALQ, i.e. a work of fiction or an essay devoted to the arts or literature. Publications in electronic format, works published at the author's expense and self-publishing are also eligible.
Emerging storytellers or spoken word artists in the literary domain must:
- Have participated as a storyteller in a minimum of three and a maximum of six events recognized by their peers.
Collective
A collective designates a group of artists or writers, no matter how many in number. Each member must be a professional artist as defined above and meet the eligibility criteria.
One member must represent the group as a coordinator. Permanent collectives must always be represented by the same coordinator, apart from exceptional circumstances.
In the case of architecture, a collective is not a professional firm, but rather a group of professionals formed for the purpose of realizing a particular project.
Particular conditions
To be eligible for the CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal, an artist or collective must:
- Submit their candidacy or agree to their nomination by a third party.
- Have produced or created a work or an exhibition* and have presented it publicly for the first time in a dissemination context recognized by his peers** between August 31, 2023 and September 1, 2024.
*In the case of an exhibition, all the works shown must have been presented for the first time, within the eligibility period.
**With regard to publications, self-published books are eligible.
Ineligible candidates
Ineligible for this prize are:
- Groups that have been legally constituted as profit-making or non-profit corporations or general partnerships
- The members of the CALQ' s board of directors
- Members of the personnel of Culture Montréal, of the CALQ, the ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles and any other organization associated with the awarding of this prize.
Evaluation criteria
1. Artistic quality of the work presented: 65 %
- Artistic quality of the work (30 %)
- Interest of the work (20 %)
- Innovative aspect of the work (15 %)
2. Impact of the work presented: 35 %
- The work's contribution to the development of the discipline (15 %)
- The impact of the first public presentation of the work (10 %)
- The extent of the work's critical success and dissemination (10 %)
Evaluation of the work submitted
Candidacies will be evaluated by a selection committee, the majority of whose members derive from the Montréal region. They are representative of the artistic disciplines for which the candidacies are submitted. Members are recognized for their competence in their artistic domain and knowledge of their artistic milieu.
All candidacies will be evaluated on their merit, according to the specific objectives and criteria of the Prix du CALQ - Œuvre de la relève à Montréal (CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal).
Ethics
The members of the selection committee are subject to the code of ethics and professional conduct in force at the CALQ. All of them must act in good faith in the performance of their duties and refrain from participating in any discussion concerning a candidacy that risks being marred by a conflict of interest. Moreover, confidential or privileged information transmitted to them may not be used for their own purposes.

Content of the application file
All documents must be clearly identified with the candidate or nominee's name.

Subject to the provisions of the Act respecting access to documents held by public bodies and the protection of personal information, the CALQ respects confidentiality of the documents and information in its possession as well as those sent to it.
Recommendations specific to a media type

Recommendation:

Note:

Allocation of the award
Under the structure of the CALQ Prize – Work by an Emerging Artist in Montréal :
- The CALQ will award only one prize annually.
- The financial award in conjunction with this prize is indivisible and must be disbursed in full to an artist, writer or the members of an artists' or writers' collective, with the prize to be awarded in respect of a single work or exhibition.
- The prize will be awarded during a ceremony organized by Culture Montréal.
