White walls are never that white, never that blank, for Louise Déry. In the places where she exhibits, they soak up the history of the works they receive and await their next opportunity to continue the dialogue. Louise Déry has made generating dialogue a strength. Her projects become a source of experimentation that sets its sights on the discussions that emerge from the works, between them, and between the walls where they are exhibited and their observers.
For over 40 years, Louise Déry has been lending her incredible know-how to museology and art history as a curator, museum director, exhibition curator, teacher, mentor, researcher, editor, and author. Drawn to the dimension of knowledge in art, she has been continuing her reflections in a safe space, as director of the Galerie de l’UQAM since 1997.
A sensitive, dogged leader, Louise Déry is staunch in her defense of emerging artists and has made it her duty to discover and give them a springboard. Great visual artists have been encouraged, supported, and exhibited thanks to her dedicated efforts. Her undeniable acumen is behind the success of sculptor David Altmjed, whose work has had international visibility since the curator proposed one of his pieces to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2007. At the same time, she confirmed the impact of her contribution to Québec art.
Her tremendous reach, in the shadows of the stars she has spawned, has extended into her support for emerging artists and made its way into promoting women artists and disseminating Québec artists at home and abroad. She has maintained her drive, is the force behind exhibitions, works, and artists, and is following her lucky star to generate new dialogue.
