Composers’ Exchange and Residencies for New Music / Québec - Dresden (Hellerau)

Montréal, November 18, 2016 – The Goethe-Institut Montreal, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Le Vivier – Carrefour des musiques nouvelles and HELLERAU - Europäisches Zentrum Der Künste Dresden are pleased to offer Anna Korsun and Simon Martin a two month residency in new music composition, respectively in Montreal and Dresden from mid-October to mid-December 2016.

These residencies will offer important experiences to the composers in terms of their professional development. A new environment and the opportunity to meet other local artists will create favourable conditions for creativity, the development of their artistic practices and for their international careers. During her residency in Montreal, Anna Korsun will be working on a new composition under the working title In another room. In counterpart, the Québécois composer Simon Martin is welcomed at HELLERAU - Europäisches Zentrum Der Künste Dresden to compose a work under the working title Art Music for Horn, Trombone, Tuba and Electronic Device.

This residency program for new music between Quebec and Germany aims to establish lasting relationships and confrontation of points of view between Québec composers and their German counterparts, thereby contributing to their artistic growth and career development. The residency also aims to promote the dissemination of works by the selected composers in Québec and in Germany.

Anna Korsun

Born in Donetsk, Ukraine in 1986, Anna Korsun studied at the National Academy of music P.A. Tchaikovsky in Kiev and at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Munich. She has participated in workshops with the Ensemble Recherche, the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, as well as various composers including Sandeep Bhagwati and Helmut Lachenmann. She has performed at numerous international festivals, including MUSLAB Mexico, Warsaw Autumn and Lange Nacht der Musik. The work of Anna Korsun has received several prizes, including the Director’s Choice Award from the Boston Metro Opera. She is also the recipient of a grant from the Künstlerhaus Schloss Solitude and the Cité internationale des Arts de Paris.

Simon Martin

Composer of instrumental contemporary concert music, Simon Martin (1981) graduated from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (2006). Finalist for the Jules Léger Prize (2008), his music has been performed throughout Canada, in the United States and many European countries and has been broadcast by CBC Radio 2 and Espace musique. He is president/founder of Projections libérantes (2011), a production company for which he is artistic director. Based on critical and philosophical reflection, his work aims to be a poetic and symbolic representation of the reconciliation between humankind and matter – between sound and music. This is the subject of the Doctoral thesis he has undertaken at Université de Montréal (2012) with the support of the Fonds de recherché Québécois sur la société et la culture. His articles have been published by many magazines and newspapers (Circuit, Spirale, Argument, L’Action nationale, Le Devoir and Le Couac). He is Prize Winner of the Concours d’articles de vulgarisation de la recherché de la Société québécoise de recherche en musique (2013).
